Quick Anti-Aging Fashion Tips: All About the Fit
Well-fitted clothing can shave years off of your look. Even small details make a big difference. Use these quick tips for spring and summer shopping:
- A higher armhole cut visually lifts the eye – so you look younger, thinner, and fitter. The higher cut visually frames your torso. If you try on a garment that doesn’t look quite right, pinch the top straps or shoulder seam to see if an alteration might work. This simple fix may lift years from your look.
- Consider a 3/4 sleeve length for sweaters and jackets. This has a youthful and more casual appearance. If a sweater has long sleeves, simply push them up to 3/4 length. If a shirt or blouse has long sleeves, consider taking them to a 3/4 length. A good tailor can alter sleeve length inexpensively.
- Fit tops to your shape. Baggy, loose and boxy shapes make you look, well, baggy, boxy and loose. Not a flattering picture.
- Camouflage heavy spots by drawing attention to your best features. For example: a bright colored sweater with a beautiful neckline draws attention to your face and shoulders – and away from heavy hips.
Tailoring clothes to fit your body may cost more, but what a difference: from frumpy to fabulous in an instant. When purchasing clothing, look for fit in the largest part of your body – everything else can be taken in. For example, if you have wide shoulders or hips, buy garments that fit to the shoulder or hip-line, and have a tailor bring the rest in.
Note: the more complex the alteration, the higher the cost. Shoulders are virtually impossible to alter well, so make certain that the shoulder fits to begin with. Alterations for the waistline on fitted garments like skirts, jeans and slacks will cost more than other simple alterations because the waistband may need to be removed and adjusted.
